Flooring Installation has its own set of British Standards that while not a legal requirement outlines best practice to follow in order to help ensure the install quality and longevity of your new floor covering, including Wood, Carpet and Vinyl (tiles and sheet)
This includes, but is not limited to:
▪ Testing the subfloor to make sure it is below recommended RH (relative Humidity) reading to the type of floor covering and applying a waterproof surface membrane where required
▪ Leaving the required expansion gap for flooring such as wood, laminate and click type LVT to accommodate natural movement caused by temperature and moisture changes
▪ How to manage underfloor heating (UFH) primarily covering the safe maximum operating temperatures, installation procedures, and required, moisture testing, particularly focusing on limiting the surface temperature to protect floor finishes
▪ What ply should be used and how it is fixed
▪ How smooth or flat (not level) the subfloor should be
📋 Most of the flooring manufacturers installation guidance also refers to the British Standards, which is required to be followed in order for your product warranty to remain valid.
🏠 Wood & Wood-based Panels (BS 8201:2011): Covers installation, design, and environmental conditions (moisture, temperature).
🏠 Resilient Flooring (BS 8203:2017): Covers installation of cork, linoleum, plastics, and rubber, including subfloor requirements.
🏠 Textile Floor Coverings (BS 5325:2020): Includes guidelines on underlays and installation.
